The PositionPhD Student - Next Generation Biologics Discovery by Microfluidics (m/f/d)
In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development organisation (pRED), we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. At pRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary life-changing innovation at speed.
This position is located in the Lead Identification Department within the Large Molecule Research unit, where the discovery and optimization of next generation biotherapeutics is the primary focus. In the Lead Identification department, we employin vivo and in vitro antibody generation technologies in combination with protein engineering, functional high throughput screening and sophisticated in vitro selection technologies. In close collaboration with our therapeutic areas and functions, we convert hypotheses into innovative medicines.
Job mission
We are offering an outstanding opportunity for a PhD student to work within a highly engaged team of antibody engineering and high throughput assay specialists. You will actively participate in establishing a microfluidic based, single-cell screening platform for the selection and characterization of diverse mono- and multispecific antibody formats. In close collaboration with other departments, you will also be involved in the development and implementation of new functional assay readouts, sensitive detection methods and protein engineering approaches.
Your impact
- Implementing a state-of-the-art microfluidic/droplet based screening platform for lead discovery and single cell screening
- Developing and optimizing novel functional assay readouts and sensitive detection methods
- Evolving modular cloning approaches for complex antibody-based format libraries in relevant expression and display host cells
- Devising innovative ways of early functional and biophysical selection and screening of therapeutic lead candidates
You thrive in a dynamic, inclusive environment that gives you full accountability for your own contributions and development. You are dedicated to establishing a culture of mutual support, cross-training, continuous learning and self-organization to meet project and functional goals.
- You hold a Master degree in biology, bioengineering, biophysics or a similar area
- You have excellent analytical, data handling and problem solving skills and a strong passion for science
- You have profound experience in protein interaction assays, flow cytometry and/or cell-based reporter assays
- You have a solid background in protein biochemistry, molecular biology and ideally NGS technologies
- You have ideally already gained experience with microfluidic/droplet based single cell screening and/or hands-on experience with in vitro evolution and display technologies
- You have strong oral and written communication skills in English
