At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Techno-economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3), we develop strategies for meeting the global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. In addition, we evaluate the impacts of various technologies on infrastructure for the energy carriers of electricity, gas, hydrogen, and heat. To accomplish the aim of reducing GHG emissions, the energy system is in the process of transitioning from a fossil fuel-based energy supply to a more sustainable one. In this scenario, the adoption of clean energy technologies such as battery electric vehicles, heat pumps, and photovoltaics has increased in recent years. In addition to these technologies, construction industries are also adopting battery-powered heavy-duty vehicles. However, these technologies are incorporated into the electrical grid at the distribution level, resulting in power quality issues. Therefore, this thesis aims at assessing the distribution network issues using power flow simulations on synthetic networks and performing network reinforcement to alleviate any potential challenges.

We Offer The Following Master Thesis

Master Thesis - Effects of Heavy-duty Battery Operated Construction Vehicles on Distribution Networks

Your Job

  • Literature review on existing studies with respect to battery operated heavy-duty vehicles in distribution networks
  • Developing synthetic load profiles for heavy-duty construction vehicles powered by batteries
  • Outlook for future penetration of battery operated heavy-duty constriction vehicles
  • Identifying significant network vulnerabilities posed by battery operated heavy-duty construction vehicles
  • Performing power flow analysis on the synthetic distribution networks
  • Analyzing the operational limiting factor violations with respect to the integration of construction vehicles
  • Sensitivity analysis with various penetration levels of construction vehicles in distribution networks

Your Profile

  • Current master studies in the field of mathematics, electrical engineering, energy engineering, computer science, or a related field of study
  • Prior knowledge of object-oriented programming (OOP) and Python is required
  • Willingness to familiarise yourself with new models and methods
  • Independent and analytical way of working
  • Interest in energy technology and energy management
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English

Please feel free to apply for the position even if you do not have all the required skills and knowledge. We may be able to teach you missing skills during your induction.
