At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Techno-economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3), we develop strategies for meeting the global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. In addition, we evaluate the impacts of various technologies on infrastructure for the energy carriers of electricity, gas, hydrogen, and heat. To accomplish the aim of reducing GHG emissions, the energy system is in the process of transitioning from a fossil fuel-based energy supply to a more sustainable one. In this scenario, the adoption of clean energy technologies such as battery electric vehicles, heat pumps, and photovoltaics has increased in recent years. In addition to these technologies, construction industries are also adopting battery-powered heavy-duty vehicles. However, these technologies are incorporated into the electrical grid at the distribution level, resulting in power quality issues. Therefore, this thesis aims at assessing the distribution network issues using power flow simulations on synthetic networks and performing network reinforcement to alleviate any potential challenges.
