Job content
What To ExpectMechanical engineers within the High Voltage Distribution team routinely tackle extremely difficult engineering challenges and continuously push beyond what was deemed impossible in regards to mechanical packaging, electrical and thermal performance, cost, and delivery timelines.
Working closely with electrical engineers, firmware engineers, and manufacturing engineers, the technologies developed by the mechanical engineering team enable world class performance in our vehicles and energy storage products. This is evident by the unequaled acceleration and supercharging time of our vehicles. Such feats demand strong creativity, strict engineering rigor using first principles reasoning, and passion to push the boundaries of technology. You will work alongside exceptionally motivated engineers in a fast and rapidly changing environment. You must be determined to make your designs successful and excited to engineer the best electric vehicles in the world.
What You’ll Do
- As part of the High Voltage Engineering team, you will design, release, and launch high voltage assemblies and components to meet program requirements, responsibilities to include:
- Full product design ownership, from concept through iterative design to production launch and ramp 3D design of mechanical parts and assemblies used in vehicle charging systems, charge ports, high voltage conductors, connection systems, and junction boxes
- Developing novel technologies and new manufacturing techniques related to the same
- Performing design analysis including thermal, structural, design for manufacturing, and design for assembly
- Solving complex electro-mechanical packaging issues including electrical isolation, sealing, thermal management, joining systems, EMC, and structural abuse cases
- Supporting vehicle development milestones, prototype/production builds, and function validation
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams including mechanical, systems, electrical, manufacturing, test, and service engineers to ensure optimal system design, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability
- Creating 2D drawing packages using GD&T and manufacturing instructions for parts and assemblies
- Owning advanced testing, root causing of test failures, solutions to production problems and field issues
- Working with procurement teams and global suppliers to ramp designs into production
- A study in Mechanical Engineering. Exceptional work and achievement will be accepted instead of a degree
- Hands-on engineering experience and proven track record in mechanical product development
- Proven experience in taking designs from concept to medium to high volume manufacturing
- Evidence of exceptional ability with proven ability to solve challenging problems with minimal guidance
- Proven experience in a technical leadership role, developing product architecture and product requirements
- Strong knowledge of engineering fundamentals including structural, thermal, electrical and failure mechanics
- Deep understanding of materials used in mechanical design (metals, plastics, insulators, seals, etc)
- Expertise in a wide variety of component fabrication methods including various high volume manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, die casting, metal stamping, extrusion, forging, and plating
- Expertise with the development of DFMEAs, design for reliability, and performing data analysis
- Expertise in tolerance analysis, applying GD&T, finite element analysis (FEA), and basic thermal models
- Experience with PLM systems, engineering changes, deviations, BOM structuring, etc
- Expertise in CATIA V5/V6. Extensive experience in other CAD software is also acceptable 10-20% of travel to support production launch (supplier visits, on-site at Tesla factories, etc.)
- Experience with global automotive industry standards, environmental, reliability, safety, compliance, and homologation requirements that guide consumer vehicle high voltage systems and EV charging
- Experience in solar, energy storage, electric vehicle, or EV charging industry
