The Senior Director, Workplace EHS Excellence works with other EHS leaders, senior Commercial, ESG, Deliver, R&D, MAKE, Engineering & Property Services, and Supply Chain Senior leaders in development and implementation of EHS strategies and programs. S/he will also interface with external suppliers, global EHS regulatory agencies, ISO certification registrar, professional associations, external thought leaders, NGO’s, & other.

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Consumer Health business to create a new publicly traded company. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 24 months, and it will be subject to legal requirements including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as required, and other customary conditions and approvals.  

It is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, this position may be conveyed with New Consumer Health. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to the successful candidate by New Consumer Health at an appropriate time and would be subject to any necessary consultation processes. 

Roles And Responsibilities

Workplace EHS Excellence leads a team of EHS (Safety, Occupational Health & Environment) experts to develop and implement comprehensive standards and strategies to build technical competencies that deliver a safe, healthy, environmentally sound workplace across NCHC internal and external value streams. This role is a key leadership position for global EHS technical disciplines, subject matter expertise and EHS culture. Specific areas of support include industrial hygiene, process safety management, occupational safety, ergonomics, fleet safety, occupational health, assurance, and office EHS.
  • Leader of approximately 15 senior level global safety, health and environmental subject matter experts (SME) including 2 regional Medical Directors and Occupational Nurses.
  • Global strategic leader who engages subject matter experts in development and deployment of best in class EHS programs that drive continuous improvement, compliance to applicable regulations and NCHC standards, reduce risk, eliminate severe and fatal (SIF) injuries, drives employee health and prevent undesired environmental events.
  • Cultivates deep SME expertise and fosters continuous improvement in the EHS organization capabilities, processes and the digital ecosystem through development and application of SMEs.
  • Encourages use of and creates an environment where innovation flourishes to reduce risk and sets NCHC as benchmark for EHS innovation.
  • Engages SME’s in support of EHS assurance audits and governance processes with subject matter expertise.
  • Thought leader who collaborates with business leaders to develop, align and drive continuous improvement in leadership behaviors that support NCHC culture principles by incorporating human and organizational behavior techniques and safety of work mindset.
  • Outstanding leadership; ability to gain trust and influence at all levels; collaborative.
  • Strong communicator who is credible and self-assured; ability to create a sense of urgency around preventing injuries, illness and environmental contamination while conserving natural resources.
  • Develops and implements global technical plans (strategy and tactics) to assure EHS compliance with applicable regulations and NCHC EHS standards, to eliminate or control EHS risks in the workplace, prevent employee injuries and illnesses and environmental contamination while facilitating the conservation of limited natural resources.
  • Collaborates with the EHS regional teams, troubleshooting, adapting and deploying safety strategies/tactics to the breadth of businesses across NCHC.
  • Responsible for building a culture that hires, grows & develops talent, inspires diversity & inclusive behaviors and enables high performing teams. Leads and develops talent consistent with the expectations of the NCHC Leadership Imperatives.
  • Leverages senior level expertise across NCHC to provide cost-effective technical guidance and strengthen technical competency.
  • Stewards NCHC’s process for setting global strategy, policy, standards and goals in the areas of occupational health, industrial hygiene, process safety management, occupational safety, ergonomics, fleet safety and office EHS.
  • Engages externally to benchmark and assure NCHC stays at the forefront of innovative EHS solutions as well as to advance NCHC’s thought leadership and impact through collaborative partnerships in the workplace EHS space.

Qualifications
  • Requires Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in management or EHS technical field.
  • Years of experience: 15+
  • Expert technical understanding of global workplace EHS regulations and issues.
  • Knowledge of global EHS regulations & ISO certifications, EHS Management systems and current trends in EHS Culture
  • Business acumen / high level of market awareness and customer sensitivity.
  • Outstanding leadership, ability to gain trust and influence at all levels and collaborative.
  • Effective team development capability, exemplified by a track record of leading, coaching and developing superior EHS professionals.
  • Strong communicator who is credible and self-assured; strong technical skills with the ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an easily understood manner.
  • Strong compliance orientation with a focus on end-to-end global/regional EHS process management.
  • Ability to work in a matrix, team-oriented environment.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.

Preferred Requirements

Preferred Requirements/Competencies (Consider and identify requirements/competencies that are not required to perform the job, but would be very helpful to performing the job)
  • Advanced degree in management or EHS technical field
  • Certifications in EHS (e.g., CSP, PE, CIH),
  • Six Sigma, FPX certification
