The Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute e. V. (FLI), Jena, Germany, (www.leibniz-fli.de), is a federal- and state of Thuringia-funded research institute. As a member of the Leibniz Association (Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz), FLI’s internationally visible and highly competitive research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of aging and age-associated diseases. At the FLI over 180 scientists from more than 40 countries strive to create the basis for new approaches in medicine to improve health in the elderly.

Scientific Director (m/f/d)

The Scientific Director leads the Institute, in coordination with the Head of Administration.

In tandem with the Board of Trustees, the Scientific Advisory Board and the FLI Assembly of Research Group Leaders, the Scientific Director shapes the scientific focus of the Institute and all issues pertaining to the Institute’s scientific activities fall within the Scientific Director’s scope of responsibility. Alongside the FLI Research Group Leaders, the Scientific Director coordinates synergistic research activities at the FLI and assumes responsibility for ensuring compliance with all applicable legal requirements.

The Directorship requires a person with excellent leadership and communication skills, to be applied to fostering close collaborations at national and international levels with high-caliber partners. The competence to direct scientific activities in visionary and strategic terms is expected, as is the ability to interact productively and decisively with colleagues.

Professional excellence and proven research achievements in the life sciences are mandatory, as well as a working knowledge in German and excellent English language skills. A familiarity with the German science system and the range of opportunities available to publicly funded institutions is considered advantageous.

The position of Scientific Director at the FLI is endowed with generously funded own research opportunities and is connected to the appointment as tenured (W3) professor at the University of Jena (FSU).
