About Trailstone

Trailstone is a global energy and technology company, operating at the intersection of renewable and conventional power. We trade energy in global markets, and we provide a best-in-class service to manage the inherent intermittency of renewable power generation across the short, medium and long term.

As an energy trader, we buy and sell electricity and gas which is physically delivered on the grids, and we leverage our physical market knowledge to trade financial commodities.

As a provider of renewable energy management services, we take on the complexity of managing renewable power across different countries so that our customers can focus on their core mission of investment and growth. Trailstone offers an efficient, fully automated front-to-back renewable power management platform underpinned by our long-standing market experience, proprietary technology, data analytics and meteorology.

About the Role

Quantitative Researchers at Trailstone play a central role in our mission of making sustainable energy sustainable. You will be a key member of a multi-disciplinary team of quantitative and fundamental analysts, developers, traders and meteorologists engaged in the expansion of our renewable asset management business, power and gas trading, and traditional wholesale structured transactions.

The successful candidate is required to be based in our Berlin office to foster strong in-person relationships with their colleagues. Comprehensive relocation and immigration support is available.

As a Quantitative Researcher, you will:

  • Design, enhance and implement rigorous scientific processes to identify data sources and models that predict prices, price variability, and liquidity in European power and gas markets at various time resolutions
  • Synthesize quantitative research with your colleagues’ domain expertise to design, productionize, and continuously improve systematic trading strategies that can successfully adapt to an evolving commodities landscape
  • Uncover opportunities to enhance PNL and/or R&D output through new models, tools or technologies, and build or adapt such resources to reflect the firm’s particular needs
  • Work closely with developers and our Technology team to ensure robust implementation of models and tools consistent with Trailstone’s technology roadmap

Essential Qualifications

  • Theoretical expertise and significant project experience in at least two of the following domains, preferably with applications to quant finance: statistics (classical or Bayesian), stochastic processes, optimization, reinforcement learning, and deep learning
  • Interpersonal and communication skills that drive productive technical discussions, spirited collaborations, and knowledge dissemination across the firm
  • Proficiency with Python for both general computer programming and for quantitative analysis
  • A degree in a quantitative field (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Economics). Very strong, relevant working experience is also accepted in the absence of such a degree

Advantageous Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD in a quantitative field
  • Experience with the end-to-end process for research and production of intra-day trading algorithms or trade-execution algorithms
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across different levels of the global business
  • Academic or industry-based knowledge of European power markets
  • A demonstrable interest in developing a career in energy trading and renewables management
  • SQL proficiency at intermediate level or above
  • Proponent of software engineering techniques and methods, e.g., version control, agile development, continuous integration, code review, unit and integration testing
  • Experience with other scientific and mathematical programming languages, especially Julia
  • Familiarity valuing and hedging swaps, derivatives, and other financial instruments
