Project Description – Plugging Of Steam Generator Tubes

Steam generator tube integrity is important to the safe operation of pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). Within the frame of the Eddy current inspection of the steam generator tubes, tubes presenting excise wall degradation are to be closed in order to maintain the integrity of the reactor coolant pressure boundary.

Westinghouse has developed the mechanical rolled plug solution for the plugging of steam generator tubes. The mechanical rolled plug is installed into the affected tube by mechanical expansion. The project consists in elaborating a qualification file based on the requirements of industrial codes and customer specific specifications.

The Project Steps Are
  • Familiarization with the steam generator plugging technique and equipment
  • Analysis of the requirements of industrial codes and customer specific specifications
  • Review of the existing qualification files and identification of gaps
  • Design, set-up and commissioning of testing device
  • Preparation of test specimens and performance of laboratory tests e.g. pressure tests, leak tests, thermal cyclic tests, etc.
  • Establishment of technical documents: test program, test report, qualification report, etc
  • Optional: testing and improvement of the plug removal process
Candidate Profile
  • Final year Engineering student (permanent contract opportunities after your internship!)
  • Master Degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics preferred
  • Fluent German and English. French is a plus
Internship based in Mannheim + partially home office

Duration: 4 to 6 months
