PhD position open for a 3-4 year period in the project: Mechanism of human peptides protecting against therapy-induced leukemia
PhD (f/m/d) (65%)

The University Hospital Ulm and its employees stands for a modern and high quality patient care, excellent university research and medical education focused on the future as well as apprenticeships in attractive professional fields. The requirements for this are qualified and committed employees.
We are looking for a PhD student with a pioneer spirit who enjoys to work independently as well as integrated in our interdisciplinary team of scientists. Our research focuses on pathogenic DNA repair and replication mechanisms that drive tumorigenesis and represent their Achilles heel to be targeted by therapeutic interventions.
Our work revealed DNA break formation and rearrangements at the Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL) gene of the human genome, once DNA replication stress shuttles Endonuclease G from mitochondria to the nucleus. Library screening as well as 3D structure modelling identified human peptides that protect against these genome rearrangements causing secondary leukemia in response to chemotherapy. The aim of this project will be to elucidate the mechanisms of peptidic compounds that protect against leukemia-inducing genome rearrangements. The candidate will exploit unique model systems to dissect the mechanisms of therapy-induced rearrangements at fragile sites. Techniques will cover the full range of molecular and cell biological methods from peptide biochemistry to multiparametric immunofluorescence microscopy as well as ChiP-Seq and proteomics.

We offer
  • access to the International PhD Programme in Molecular Medicine at Ulm University, Germany, see website: http://www.uni-ulm.de/mm/
  • funding according to TV-L E13 (65%)
  • a highly interdisciplinary work environment within DFG-CRC1279 "Exploiting the human peptidome for novel antimicrobial and anticancer agents"
  • access to multiple core facilities including proteomics, genomics and bioinformatics
Apply if you have
  • Master in Molecular Medicine, Biochemistry, Biology or a related field
  • Previous experience in cell biology and protein biochemistry
  • Strong interest in DNA damage response mechanisms and targeted therapy
  • fluent English language skills
To apply, please submit your CV with certificates, prior publications, references and a one-page letter of motivation as single pdf file via email.
