Stellenbeschreibung

Discover molecular pathways for marine glyco-carbon sequestration

ERC project C-Quest

The ERC project C-Quest invites you to become a doctor by discovering why diatoms release and sequester carbon in form of sulfated glycans in the ocean. You will combine experiments, theory, chemistry and biology to discover why diatoms divert a significant percentage of their light harvested carbon energy into sulfated, secreted glycans. Is glycan secretion a waste of carbon energy or is it an investment with unknown biological returns? Answering this and related questions requires you to sample perspectives from diatoms, bacteria or other organisms of your choice. To explore and learn we welcome you to join our international team of researchers including students, technicians, doctors and administrators with expertise in chemistry, spectroscopy, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, geochemistry, cell biology, ecology, science management and outreach. We work at the University of Bremen, in the MARUM and at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology. We also travel to seek help from scientists across the globe. Question driven frontier research requires us to innovate technology, combine experiments and approaches, paper work, laboratory work, computer work and research ship cruises. We cannot wait for you to join the challenge and discover why diatoms secrete glycans that sequester carbon in the ocean.

Experience we offer:

  • Glycobiochemistry
  • Carbon sequestration
  • Microbiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Research on ships
