The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.
Fraunhofer IAF is one of the world‘s leading research institutions in the field of III-V semiconductors and synthetic diamond, developing technologies for use in communications, energy, mobility, industry and medicine.
In our theory group “Quantum Information”, we offer a master’s thesis in the field of variational quantum algorithms. The aim is to apply the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) to quantum-chemistry problems in order to obtain the ground state energy of molecules of different sizes. The master student will have the opportunity to classically simulate quantum algorithms on our HPC system and execute quantum algorithms both on quantum computers and quantum simulators.
What you will do
- broad education in quantum-computing
- programming quantum algorithms (Python, Qiskit)
- simulation of quantum algorithms on our own HPC system at Fraunhofer IAF
- possibility to execute the quantum algorithm on real quantum hardware (computers or simulators)
- possibility to benchmark quantum computers of different architecture
- learning about error-mitigation techniques
- possibility to choose own research direction from different ongoing and starting projects
- publication of results in scientific journals
What you bring to the table
- solid knowledge of quantum mechanics
- programming skills are a plus
- engagement and an eagerness to learn
What you can expect
A thesis at Fraunhofer IAF allows you to apply the knowledge you have acquired during your studies to specific research projects. With us, you can work scientifically and gain project experience at the same time. We offer modern laboratory equipment, supervision by experienced scientists and a variety of opportunities for further education
The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
