The Institute for Energy and Climate Research (IEK-14), Electrochemical Process Engineering at Forschungszentrum Jülich with more than 20 years of experience in electrochemical energy conversion, is at the forefront of innovative solutions for clean and sustainable energy conversion devices. In collaboration with national and international partners from research and industry, we develop solutions for mobile, portable and stationary applications and research the use of liquid energy carriers as fuels as well as their efficient and environmentally friendly production and use. Hydrogen is considered the best alternative to fossil fuels; if it is generated with renewable electricity, it is an excellent energy carrier that can be used and converted without carbon dioxide emissions. Low-temperature water electrolysis is considered the preferred route for the large-scale production of hydrogen. However, the efficiency of water electrolysis is highly dependent on the activity of the electrocatalysts. Thus, the development of highly effective, stable, and inexpensive materials for the oxygen evolution reaction would have a significant impact. Recently, single-atom catalysts have emerged as the new frontier in catalysis science due to their maximum utilization of atoms and excellent catalytic reaction activity. The synthesis of these materials will provide a better understanding of the mechanism beyond activity and stability for the oxygen evolution reaction in an acidic medium.

Starting as soon as possible, we offer you an exciting

Master Thesis - Single Atom Catalysts based on Noble Metal for Water Electrolyzers

Your Job

The focus of this master thesis is to design highly effective, stable, and cheap materials for the oxygen evolution reaction. The activity will be studied by conduction half-cell electrochemical characterization and study the degradation behaviour to obtain strategies for minimizing corrosion while boosting the performance. Insights into the mechanism will accelerate the introduction of low-loading Platinum-Group-Metal materials for the PEM water electrolyzer. Your Tasks in detail:
  • Synthesis of Ir and Ru single atom catalysts
  • Development and planning of the synthesis procedure
  • Electrochemical screening of the materials
  • Physical-chemical characterization of the materials
  • Depending on the catalysts performance; manufacturing of MEA based on the synthesized catalysts and analysis of them

Your Profile

  • Current master studies with excellent marks in Material Science, Physics, Engineering or Chemistry
  • Basic knowledge of electrochemistry and synthesis strategy
  • Laboratory experiences in the field of synthesis and characterization
  • Willingness to learn and ability to think outside of the box
  • Excellent cooperation, communication and teamwork abilities
  • Independent, self-motivated and responsible
  • Fluency in English
  • Fluency in German is advantageous
