In a dynamic and international work environment we develop at the Institute of Energy and Climate Research - Materials Synthesis and Processing (IEK-1) materials and components for highly efficient future energy conversion and storage systems (in particular, oxide ceramic fuel cells, solid-state batteries, thermal barrier coatings for gas turbines and gas separation membranes). The main focus is put on inorganic materials which are processed as functional layers via gas phase or powder deposition. Our core competences allow for a rapid transfer of scientific results for industrial implementation, contributing to the solution of one of the great societal challenges of our time.

Master Thesis - Characterization of the impurity tolerance of perovskite oxides with exsolved catalyst nanoparticles

Your Job

In the course of a project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), we are investigating the effects of coupling a biomass gasification unit with a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) to produce electricity from biomass. This Master-thesis will be dedicated to the study of a completey new material for the fuel electrode, which exsolves nanoscaled catalyst particles on the oxide surface under operational conditions. This material will be characterized with regards to its physical properties, especially regarding the tolerance of impurities contained in the fuel gas and redox cycling. Parts of these experiments will be conducted at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Your Main Tasks Will Include

  • Synthesis and characterization of the ceramic powders
  • Manufacturing of dense and porous ceramics
  • Investigation of the conductivity and exsolution properties
  • Conduct extensive materialographic, chemical and structural investigations of the tested materials to characterize the interaction of fuel contaminants with the fuel electrode materials.

The tests concerning the chemical and electrochemical interactions of the new electrode materials with fuel gas contaminants will be performed at the Lehrstuhl für Energiesysteme (LES) at Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Your Profile

  • You are pursuing a Master degree in the field of Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or Physics
  • You have a solid background in the area of inorganic, non-metallic materials
  • You enjoy hands-on tasks in a laboratory
  • Basic knowledge of ceramic powder processing or electrochemistry are strong assets, but not mandatory
  • You show initiative and work independently
  • You enjoy working in a team and have good communications skills
  • You are fluent in English and have a strong command of the German language (B2 or higher)

Our Offer
