The position (75 % of a fulltime position) of a

Research assistant

is available at the Numerics Group (Prof. Dr. Christian Rieger) in the Department Mathematics and

Computer Science. It is to be filled as soon as possible for 3 years. Classification is in pay grade 13

(75%) of the Hessian collective agreement.

Responsibilities include scientific research within the DFG funded project on kernel based multilevel

methods for high dimensional approximation problems using sparse grids. This project is a cooperation

with the University of Bayreuth (Prof. Dr. Wendland). The research tasks include the development of

problem adapted approximation schemes and their error analysis. Moreover the tasks include also to

contribute to the numerical implementation and validation of those methods.

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As

part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific

research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

We are seeking for a highly motivated candidate with a degree in mathematics (diploma, master’s

degree or equivalent) and good background in kernel-based approximation theory or machine learning.

Very good knowledge of the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces is expected. A solid back-

ground in the implementation of numerical methods is advantageous. The willingness to gain one’s own

scientific qualification is expected.

Philipps-Universität Marburg supports young scientists in their career development, e.g. through the

PhD program "Data Science: Mathematical Analysis, Scalable Algorithms, and Systems", positions of-

fered by the Marburg Research Academy (MARA), the International Office and places for higher edu-

cation pedagogy and personnel development.

We support women and strongly encourage them to apply. In areas where women are underrepre-

sented, female applicants will be preferred in case of equal qualifications. Applicants with children

are welcome – Philipps-University is certified as a family-friendly university. Sharing a full-time posi-

tion (§ 8 Abs. 2 S. 1 HGlG) as well as a reduction of working time is possible. Applicants with a disability

as described in SGB IX (§ 2 Abs. 2, 3) will be preferred in case of equal qualifications. Application and

interview costs can not be refunded.

All application documents must be sent to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science,

Prof. Christian Rieger only in PDF to riegerc@mathematik.uni-marburg.de before September 10th,

2021, citing reference number fb12-0024-wmz-2021.
