The candidate will strengthen the Licensing Team focusing on the consumer electronics market and coordinate closely with many other teams/groups supporting the licensing business in its aspirations. The internal collaboration partners include, the Legal Team which hosts the patent portfolio, technical support and enforcement activities, along with a transactional legal support team, the Corporate Development Team assessing investment opportunities and assisting in developing new business initiatives and strategies, the Research and Innovation group tasked with the world class research, innovation and standardization activities driving adoption of new technologies and generating new licensable assets, as well as our professional Government Affairs and Communications departments helping shape and maintain a sustainable licensing environment. The position will also interface with the Finance team, in relation to driving integrated business planning relevant to licensing business as well as structuring of licensing deals. Together, these Teams comprise more than 500 members worldwide and include significant experience relating to generating and licensing standard essential patents (“SEPs”) as well as implementation patents.This position will report to the Chief Licensing Officer and focus primarily on coordinating, developing and executing on holistic business strategies in the consumer electronics (“CE”) segment, delivering licensing revenue with customers around the globe. As part of this role, the selected individual will be responsible for developing go to market and licensing strategies for a broad set of SEPs and implementation patents relating to wireless, video and other technologies relevant for the consumer electronics market.The ideal candidate in this role will have demonstrated effectiveness as the lead negotiator of cross-border IP licensing deals, including proven track record within the consumer electronics field. The candidate will have an extensive and relevant external contact network and experience in interfacing with research and development teams contributing innovations to open standards and driving adoption of such technologies. The candidate will work together with a matrixed team of support functions including but not limited to, infringement analysis; technical due diligence, and litigation support.Critical to the strategy of InterDigital, this role is a senior-level position requiring appropriate executive presence and influence capability to support effective engagement with our Executive Team inside InterDigital as well as with our external constituents.Some of the responsibilities that the Director/VP, Licensing will be responsible for successfully executing are:Location: One of InterDigital´s existing locations in Europe (Germany, France, UK or Finland) or US.InterDigital is an equal employment opportunity employer.   • Formulate holistic business and go to market strategies in the Consumer Electronics space and lead and/or participate with patent licensing team members in the execution of such strategies by negotiation of patent license agreements. This will include, without imilitation:
  • 1. Prepare licensing strategies, financial models and presentations.
  • 2. Negotiate with potential licensees.
  • 3. Have knowledge and experience with the relevant industries and issues relevant to licensing SEPs and implementation patents.
  • 4. Review and provide input into agreements reached in the course of such negotiations.
  • 5. Have excellent oral and writing skills.
  • 6. Work closely and collaboratively with the Legal Team to draft patent license agreements and other IP-related documents.
  • 7. Demonstrate and leverage prior experience in patent licensing negotiations including some expertise in drafting agreements and knowledge of laws and trends relating to intellectual property.
  • Review and participate in negotiating and drafting agreements reached in the course of such negotiations.
  • Participate in the development of strategies, tactics and priorities to protect, assert and enforce intellectual property rights and to develop, maintain and enhance royalty revenues and other benefits accruing from enforcement activities.
  • Participate in the identification of patents to be asserted, potential infringers and appropriate approach and priority of action.
  • Provide feedback and guidance on opportunities to continuously evaluate and improve related business processes and licensing/legal templates.
  • Execute other general licensing and intellectual property matters and special projects from time to time.
  • This position will entail frequent travel to InterDigital’s customer base in Asia, as well as Europe and the United States. Required Skills and Qualifications
  • 15+ years of relevant licensing experience, reviewing and negotiating a wide variety of intellectual property transactions, with emphasis in patent license agreements.
  • Exceptional academic credentials – A business, technical or legal degree is preferred.
  • Experience with mattes related to intellectual property rights (IPR) and licensing.
  • Additional experience in the following is beneficial and desired: intellectual property litigation and arbitrations.
  • Executive presence and influence capability.
  • Attention to detail is required due to the significance of such detail in the licensing business, similarly, though, ability to understand the big picture and manage multiple transactions and projects simultaneously under deadline pressure is required.
  • Prior experience in licensing Standard Essential Patents (SEPs).
  • Existing contact network in the licensing and consumer electronics industry will be an advantage.
  • Direct hands-on experience negotiating patent license agreements. Prior experience with IP licensing business models.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property law.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must work well in fast-paced, highly collaborative, team environment.
  • Excellent business judgment, ability to think strategically and give practical advice.
  • Prior experience working in telecommunications, semiconductor, or related industries preferred.
  • Extensive domestic and foreign travel required.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills; fluency in additional languages preferred.
