Academic staff member in Mass Specrometry
Part time (65 %)
The position is part of the BMBF-funded project „High-Precision Mass Measurements with SHIPTRAP“, which aims at mass measurements of actinides and transactinides with the Penning-trap setup SHIPTRAP at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum in Darmstadt, Germany. Besides elucidating the nuclear structure of the heaviest elements, the development of future technologies and novel methods for Penning-trap mass spectrometry with increased sensitivity and highest precision is in the focus.

Your tasks:

The successful candidate will perform mass measurements on actinides and transcatinides at GSI. The candidate will help in the design and assembly of Penning trap mass spectrometers and will develop the experiment control and data acquisition. The candidate will furthermore work on the development of novel methods for Penning-trap mass spectrometry with increased sensitivity and highest precision. The candidate will publish the results in peer-reviewed journals.

Your profile:

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

  • a successfully completed scientific university degree
  • Masters, Diploma or equivalent degree in Physics or Chemistry (with focus on nuclear chemistry)
  • good communication skills in English (both verbal and written)
  • a sound background in electronics is desirable
  • good knowledge of computer programming (C++, Labview) is desirable
  • familiarity with Penning-trap mass spectrometry will be considered an advantage
  • experience with CAD packages will be considered as an added qualification
