TV-L, 3 years (option of being extended), EU project HITRIplus (call H2020-INFRAIA-2020-1)

At Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Centre (HIT), part of the Clinics for Radio Oncology of the Heidelberg University Hospital, tumor therapy with utmost dose conformity is carried out since 2009. Around 700 patients are treated with Carbon ion and proton beams every year.

HIT is a partner of the Heavy Ion Therapy Research Integration plus (HITRIplus) consortium which has recently been funded within the Horizon 2020 programme of the EU. This collaboration is bringing together all four European ion beam therapy centres with leading EU industries, academia, and research laboratories.

The goal of HITRIplus is to integrate and propel biophysics and medical research on cancer treatment with heavy ion beams while jointly developing its sophisticated instruments. Joint research activities will develop new accelerator and beam delivery technologies to extend the reach of the present generation centres and to define a new European reference design, at lower cost and dimensions, to make cancer ion therapy more accessible and to open new markets to European industry.

The open position at HIT is dedicated to new technologies for faster dose delivery by accelerator improvements. With the investigation of a new operation scheme for the heavy ion synchrotron at HIT (“multiple-energy-operation”) a major upgrade of the accelerator control system is planned:

Your topics
  • In a team of accelerator physicists assist in building an architectural model of the accelerator control system based on the underlying beam physics
  • Contribute to the system design and commissioning of front-end controllers, database, network and timing
  • Participate in beam parameter generation on front end devices in quasi-real-time
  • Work in close collaboration with an industrial partner

If you
  • have a good university degree in physics, preferably in combination with computer science
  • have good software and hardware knowledge, programming skills and preferably experience in system engineering are interested in a large-scale accelerator facility with a medical application
  • like scientific writing
You can
  • get a post-doc position (3 years funded), long-term employment intended
  • get a highly interdisciplinary research work touching accelerator science and medical physics
  • work in a progressive and mixed group of physicists, engineers and technicians
  • attend training courses and workshops
  • travel to international conferences
  • publish your results in referenced journals
  • purchase a subsidized Job-Ticket for public transport
