Your team

You will be part of the Monetary Policy Research Division in the Directorate General Research. The Division has a team of around 35 members, responsible for carrying out the following tasks: (i) conducting research on economic issues relevant to the conduct of monetary policy – this
includes work on monetary policy strategy, the monetary transmission mechanism, international
macroeconomics, the labour market, business cycles, economic growth and European
monetary integration; (ii) developing models and analytical indicators for the areas outlined above; (iii) supporting other business areas by providing research and policy advice input on the areas
outlined above, (iv) including model-based contributions to the ECB’s projections and monetary
policy analysis; (v) providing research-based policy advice to the ECB’s decision-making bodies.

In your role as Research Analyst, you will contribute to the further development of the Consumer Expectations Survey (CES). A new ECB survey on households’ economic and financial behaviour, the CES is entering a new phase of development under the joint responsibility of the Directorate General Economics, Directorate General Research and Directorate General Statistics. You will also help design the survey and the experimental survey modules to better understand household behaviour and the expectations formation process. As part of this work, you will develop computer code to conduct data validation and assist in the development of models to evaluate survey replies. There will also be scope to support the CES team’s work on research projects. This involves working closely with the project managers and CES team members at the ECB, as well as interacting with experts in other central banks and with the external survey provider.

Your role

As Research Analyst you will:

  • contribute to Consumer Expectations Survey products and processes, in particular by organising and visualising complex household survey data;
  • set up and run statistical and econometric procedures;
  • support work on the design of survey questions and the evaluation of survey results;
  • support work to formulate research-based policy advice using CES data;
  • help develop and maintain a CES data infrastructure for research purposes;
  • contribute to research projects and the organisation, planning and hosting of research-oriented events and conferences;
  • help prepare internal and external reports and research publications.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in economics or statistics or another relevant field (click here for details on degree equivalences);
  • a strong interest in supporting economic research using micro data and, especially, household survey data;
  • in-depth knowledge of household surveys and especially online survey methods;
  • a sound understanding of the economic issues related to the household sector (e.g. inflation expectations, consumption, household finance, labour markets, housing markets);
  • broad knowledge of micro econometrics and related software and applications;
  • considerable experience of programming using the statistical software package Stata;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in economics or statistics or another relevant field;
  • at least two to three years’ experience with online household survey platforms and question design, testing and evaluation and related research support;
  • experience in supporting research projects using household survey data and online survey-based methods (e.g. the conduct of randomised controlled trials);
  • experience in supporting research-based policy advice and linking survey-based data to other data sources via statistical matching techniques;
  • experience in developing web-based solutions for the visualisation and reporting of online household survey data; experience in using associated software (e.g. Tableau);
  • working experience with the statistical software packages Python and R.
