This inclusive employer is a member of myGwork – the largest global platform for the LGBTQ+ business community.Your role and responsibilities
KIT is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. From fundamental research to applications, KIT excels in a broad range of disciplines, i.e., in natural sciences, engineering sciences, economics, and the humanities and social sciences. The Institute of Product Engineering (IPEK) is a research institute at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and is a center for scientific product engineering and innovation with a focus on drive systems, mobility and power tools. The research concept of IPEK is parallel research on methods and processes of Product Generation Engineering (PGE) combined with research on the synthesis and validation of new technical systems. ABB is a leading global engineering company that energizes the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive and sustainable future. At ABB Corporate Research, we explore novel technologies and innovative methods to enhance the core business strengths of ABB. The Mechanisms and Actuators research group at the ABB Corporate Research Center in Germany has a long-standing tradition of developing innovative actuation technologies. These innovations have enabled industry-leading robust and smart solutions for the control and protection of power distribution grids and process plants. We at KIT and ABB are jointly offering a PhD position for an enthusiastic engineer with mechanical, mechatronics, material-science or similar background and an excellent masterâs degree, who wants to start a research career in the field of sustainable engineering. The position will mainly be hosted at ABB, where the PhD candidate will be part of the Mechanism and Actuators research team and do industrial research on developing sustainable technologies that shape the power grid of the future. At the same time, the PhD candidate will benefit from the cooperation and integration with IPEK/KIT providing the academic environment and scientific supervision. ⢠You conduct research on sustainable product development in the context of electromechanical switching technologies (e.g., medium-voltage circuit breakers). ⢠You work on the challenge of assessing the sustainability of a product during its design phase by applying advanced modeling techniques that span across multiple domains such as structural mechanics, multi-body dynamics, materials and manufacturing processes. ⢠You devise novel approaches to reduce the environmental impact of power grid control and protection products while considering the technical requirements for those devices. ⢠You contribute with your scientific work to a sustainable engineering approach that allows for the development of environmentally friendly products in shorter development cycles. ⢠You participate in research projects at ABB Corporate Research in collaboration with ABB development units. ⢠You interview industrial stakeholders (including ABB) for requirements and design constraints on technologies and implement your novel concepts upon the latest scientific frameworks from KIT. ⢠You validate your ideas on concrete use cases and follow your concepts through a smooth knowledge transfer into ABBâs development units.
Qualifications For The Role
- You have an M.Sc. or equivalent degree in mechanical engineering, material science, or a related field.
- You have hands-on experience in FEM and/or multibody simulation.
- Demonstrated academic and/or professional experience in product design, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, material science and life cycle assessment are considered a plus.
- Your cross-cultural communication skills, creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, and orientation for innovations help you enable new products and services.
- Ideally, you already have experience, or you are open to acquire knowledge in systematic material selection, sustainable materials and manufacturing processes as well as life cycle assessment.
- Proficient English skills are mandatory.
We look forward to receiving your application (documents submitted in English are appreciated). If you want to discover more about ABB, take another look at our website www.abb.com. ABB is able to offer you an interesting role within a highly motivated team, together with open communication structures.
