The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.
The Fraunhofer - Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena conducts applied research in the field of photonics and develops innovative optical systems to control light - from its generation and manipulation to its application. The services offered by the institute cover the entire photonic process chain ranging from opto-mechanical and opto-electronical system design to the manufacturing of customer-specific solutions and prototypes.
The department »Imaging and Sensing« of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF is looking for a student assistant, who will work on the topic of conceptual design and implementation of an application for the live configuration and parameterization of 3D sensors.
The aim is to support the further development of our measuring principles for the three-dimensional measurement of a wide variety of objects. Stripe patterns are usually projected onto the measurement objects and observed by two cameras. By coding the object surface, camera pixels in both cameras can be assigned to each other and 3D points can be calculated via triangulation. The application to be developed should consolidate, simplify, and accelerate the existing internal workflows for commissioning various 3D sensors.
What you will do
- Conceptual design, implementation, and optimization of a graphical user interface for the configuration of 3D sensors
- Programming and integration of software modules for controlling cameras and trigger hardware as well as for parsing and generating configuration files
- Programming of an interactive viewer to display data streams (camera images, 3D data) for live visualization of the configuration made
What you bring to the table
- You are studying computer science, photonics, physics, engineering, or a similar field
- You have basic knowledge of working in laboratories, with scientific equipment, and in digital data processing
- You have experience in software development, ideally in the programming languages C++ and Python
- You are motivated to learn how to control modern technologies, methods, and processes in the field of optical sensors
- Good command of written and spoken German and English
- Independent, reliable, and systematic work approach as well as solutions-oriented and analytical thinking
- Engagement, team orientation and communication skills
- Friendly and open-minded appearance
- Willingness to a significant amount of in-person work is perferred
What you can expect
- Gain valuable practical experience during your studies in the context of exciting research projects
- Collegial, open-minded and friendly
- Varied task in laboratories with modern equipment
- Networking with first-class industrial partners and research groups
- Comprehensive professional guidance and support from scientific mentors
- Flexible working hours to combine study and practice
- Very good connection to public transport
The monthly working time is agreed upon individually. The work contract will be limited. We are looking for a long-term cooperation. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees’ skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
