Role:

The Automation/Control Electrical/Equipment Safety Engineer will work to develop machine control system from concept to the implementation by working with team member and vendors. This position will be responsible design /development of Machinery/Automation/Process control to support Tesla Cell Manufacturing Sites. Candidate will design and specific control system architecture requirement PLC/controller, Network, Filed BUS Power distribution, Motor control, IOs, instrumentation device and cabling system. Need to collaborate and work with cross functional team: ME, SW, Process, and management team to ensure the control system meets the functional and regulatory Standard requirements. Reviewing vendor control design and to ensure meet the Tesla Standards, best practice and Safety requirement. Supporting Electrical and other team member to create and establish better Standardization on design, documentation, training, assembly process, commissioning and release to production. Involve on the field troubleshooting and problem solving when problem arise and for continuous machine improvement/optimization. Familiar and understanding the industrial machinery and chemical process Standards. Familiar and experience on doing equipment risk assessment and Field labeling/CE certification process.

Responsibilities:
  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process control requirements, component selection, control architecture, cost, limits.
  • Design the system control architecture and system interconnect.
  • Design Power Distribution System using Eplan Electrical P8 CAD system. The design needs to meet the NFPA79, IEC 60204-1, UL 508A Standards
  • Design Safety Interlock System including component selection using ISO 13849-1 requirement
  • Implementation (UL1740, ANSI/RIA15.06, ISO 10218 compliant) control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high volume manufacturing equipment.
  • Design Control System using Beckhoff or Siemens PLC, IOs system, Motor control with VFD or Servo Controller and instrumentation sensors system to meet the system requirement
  • Responsible for the electrical control schematic design for all automation projects from initial concept to final implementation.
  • Define system interconnect/schematic and Key control/automation components.
  • Coordinate with peers in other engineering groups to ensure that the design criteria is synchronized within all disciplines (System, Mechanical, Software, Process) to meet the requirements.
  • Work closely with project managers and electrical team members to ensure all expectations and specifications are translated into the final design.
  • Organize and manage vendor on control related deliverable to ensure meet regulatory, Tesla Standards and equipment specification.
  • Capable to do equipment risk assessment and come up with the requirement of the machinery safety.
  • Manage and lead the process to get equipment Field labeling and CE certification by NRTL
  • Handle the electrical system control and power related issues.
  • Define Power and control requirements by working with System Engineer.
  • Problem solving on any electrical design problem, issue and best practice solutions.
  • Familiarity and hand on troubleshooting Power Distribution Design, I/O panel and Safety interlock circuit.
  • Design electrical control schematic including Cable ASM
  • Interface with mechanical team/vendors to support on Actuator/stage/motors selection.
  • Interface with Software team to ensure the control architecture implementation are correct.
  • Provide training to the equipment support and maintenance team
  • Select and size electrical and electromechanical components such as servos.
  • Participate in Tesla specification and standard creation, release to Vendor and quote technical evaluation
  • Enforce application of Tesla standards, Manage suppliers during specification, design review, design approval
  • Establish test plans and control test plan execution at Vendor and at Tesla facility during installation and buy-off
Requirements:
  • Proficiency with Eplan Electrical P8 version 2.7 or higher on designing electrical control panel, control system wiring and instrumentation
  • Proficiency selecting appropriate circuit protectors, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, remote I/O, VFD, servo systems, and key electrical control components.
  • In depth knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA 79, IEC 60204-1, UL508A).
  • In depth knowledge of Safety standards (ISO 13849-1, UL 1740, ANSI/RIA15.06, ISO 10218).
  • Knowledge of chemical process safety and capable to do HAZOP and Equipment risk assessment.
  • Familiar with CE and European requirement for machinery including EMC
  • Familiar with Class 2 Division 2 requirement for industrial machinery.
  • Familiar with Beckhoff and Siemens overall control system/components and has proven tracked record of previous projects implementation.
  • Familiar with EtherCat, FSoE, ProfiNet and ProfiSafe
  • Proficiency programming and tuning variable frequency drives
  • Exposure to a wide variety of production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment utilizing: LVDT and pressure transducers, encoder, proximity, level, optical, temperature controllers
  • Familiar with Electrical interface and system wiring of Fanuc and Kuka robot
  • Experience with Vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Fanuc) electrical integration
  • Experience creating technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment
  • Experience transitioning products and processes from prototype to production desired
  • Experience with chemical process control and industrial heating system is a plus
  • Knowledge of production quality metrics is a plus
Additional Qualifications:
  • BS/MS Electrical Engineering (or equivalent – Majors in: Controls, Robotics, and Computer Control Systems, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.) or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in control engineering
  • Very good written and spoken English skills
  • Any NRTL safety training is a plus
