PhD Student (m/f/d) Development of Algorithms in the Field of Signal Processing for Novel Automotive Radar Systems

APTIV is one of the largest automotive suppliers and a global technology leader, with more than 180,000 people worldwide. We address mobility’s toughest challenges and deliver market-relevant solutions for our customers.

Automotive Radars, along with other sensors form the backbone of Autonomous driving (AD) and ad advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS). These technological advancements are enabled by extremely complex systems with a long signal processing path from radar sensor to the controller. Automotive radar systems are responsible for the detection and classification of objects and obstacles, their position, and speed relative to the ego vehicle. The development of signal processing techniques along with the understanding in millimeter-wave propagation plays a significant role in the development of future automotive radar systems. Therefore, we are searching for talented students who bring in new ideas and help to develop new radar signal processing algorithms starting from January 1st 2022.

Are you (almost) finished with your Master’s degree or are you a talented engineer working in signal processing domain and want to pursue a PhD? Do you want to bridge the gap between academics and industry and apply your scientific expertise to real challenges in the area of automated and autonomous driving?

Your tasks

  • In general: Conduct research in topics related to signal processing and algorithm development for radar system prototypes, consisting of e.g. data preparation and processing in MATLAB or Python, visualization of results, generation of performance statistics etc.

Your profile

  • You have a master’s or equivalent degree in Electrical Engineering (Preferable) or Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or Computational Physics with excellent grades.

  • You have a profound understanding of Theoretical Electrical Engineering, High Frequency Engineering and Physics of wave propagation concepts.

  • You have Interest in wave propagation effects, backscattering phenomena, polarimetry, range-Doppler processing, target angle estimation techniques etc.

  • You are able to program self-reliant in C/C++, MATLAB, Python and Visual Studio.

  • You have a very good English skills, German skills would be a plus.

  • You are looking for a challenging task and like to be part of a team.

We offer

  • Funding for a 3-year full-time PhD scholarship in cooperation with University of Wuppertal.

  • The opportunity to work in a highly research-oriented environment that works on state-of-the-art tools within the ADAS/AD domain.

  • Being part of a strong, supportive global team of highly educated Radar engineers.

  • Hands-on work with real-world sensor data to develop and test your algorithms.

  • Flexible and family-friendly working hours.

Are you interested in the position? Awesome! We are looking forward to receive your application containing your CV, a motivation letter, certifications and a current grade overview of courses taken in your Master’s degree.
