Contenuto del lavoro

At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research - Energy Systems Engineering (IEK-10) we focus on the optimal design and operation of integrated, decentralized energy systems with a high share of renewable energy. Computer simulation and numerical optimization are our essential tools to arrive at efficient, reliable, and cost-effective solutions. We contribute both to the development of mathematical models and to the development of improved simulation methods and optimization algorithms. Our methods and software-tools are validated against operating data of real systems. Furthermore, we conduct comprehensive case studies in order to test and further improve the scalability and the performance of our models and algorithms. Specially adapted methods and codes enable us to exploit the potential of high-performance computing with the aim of solving particularly large and complex problems

Your Job:

Cement production is an energy-intensive process and a source of GHG emissions. To supply energy to the process and reduce GHG emissions, cement production needs to be retrofitted with carbon mitigation and utilization technologies and an energy supply system based on renewable energies. Retrofitting cement production leads to implement electricity-based technologies and to much higher electricity consumption, therefore to higher operational costs. In this context, demand response (DR) could be applied to schedule a retrofitted cement production process under varying electricity prices, and thus balancing fluctuating renewable electricity availability.

  • In this thesis, the resource task network (RTN)-based process model will be used to determine the cost-optimal process operation and, therefore, quantify the potential savings of a retrofitted cement plant achieved by DR.

Your Profile:

  • You are a very good student with background in Chemical Engineering, Energy- or Process Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering Sciences, Simulation Sciences, or similar
  • You have experience in optimization methods,
  • good programming experience (preferably Python),
  • ability to work independently,
