Who are we?
fortiss is the research institute of the Free State of Bavaria for the development of software-intensive systems with headquarters in Munich. The scientists at the institute cooperate in research, development and transfer projects with universities and technology companies in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. The focus is on research into state-of-the-art methods, techniques and tools for the development of software- and AI-based technologies for dependable, secure cyber-physical systems such as the Internet of Things (IoT). fortiss is organized in the legal form of a non-profit limited liability company. Shareholders are the Free State of Bavaria (majority shareholder) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. www.fortiss.org
The IIoT competence center of fortiss focuses on the development of computational and networking architectures for advanced IoT applications and use-cases in sectors such as Mobility, Smart Cities, Manufacturing, etc. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: Edge computing, in particular decentralised edge architectures; deterministic wireless networking; dynamic container orchestration; information-centric networking; Edge AI.
Master Thesis – Resource scheduling across a Wi-Fi6/5G IIoT Simulation Framework (m/f/d)
In Industrial environments such as departmental shop-floors or factory plants, the communication of the different elements is often performed via wired networking systems. Wireless is starting to become introduced in these environments, and its introduction requires further tuning and performance analysis as well as ways to handle aspects such as time synchronization. In fortiss, we have developed a unique deterministic simulation framework (DetNetWiFi, https://git.fortiss.org/iiot_external/detnetwifi-ns3) based on Wi-Fi6/Ethernet. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a mechanism for resource scheduling across a Wi-Fi6/5G core, thus contributing to the existing DetNetWiFi framework development.

Your tasks:
- Get acquainted with the ns-3 DetNetWiFi framework and the existing scenarios.
- Analyse the support for the integration of a 5G core (existing modules in ns-3).
- Develop, with the support of the supervisor, a resource scheduling mechanism backward compatible with Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) across a 5G core.
- Assist in the development of experiments for specific scenarios involving multi-AP environments across a 5G core.
- Performance evaluation of a scenario to be agreed with the supervisor.
Your profile:
- Completed Bachelor’s degree and currently enrolled in a Master’s degree in computer science, information systems or similar.
- Practical experience in programming languages such as Java, C, C++.
- Practical experience with the wireless MAC Layer.
- Knowledge of discrete event simulators, and in particular the network simulator v3.0 is preferential.
Our offer:
- Dissertation to be developed in 6 months, in alignment with a selected university.
- Working within an exciting international research environment.
- International work environment.
- An international and dynamic work environment with highly qualified and motivated colleagues
- Close cooperation and possible interaction with industrial leaders in the IoT domain.
