We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with approx. 2 000 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg, Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.Our mission at the Science Education and Public Engagement (SEPE) is to bridge science and schools and to support EMBL’s external engagement programme featuring the scientific work at EMBL. SEPE is part of EMBL’s International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT).
As part of EMBL’s science education and public engagement efforts, the Laboratory opened the new permanent exhibition ‘The World of Molecular Biology’ in early 2023 on the Heidelberg campus. The exhibition offers access through pre-booked guided tours in German and English for the public, as well as guided-tours and educational courses for schools. To lead our science education and public engagement programme with ‘The World of Molecular Biology’ exhibition, we are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated Exhibition Manager to join as at the EMBL in Heidelberg, Germany. The Exhibition Manager will report to the Head of SEPE and will work closely with the Science Education team and with others in the Science Education and Public Engagement office.
Your Role
- Management of the World of Molecular Biology Exhibition programme
- Coordinating the organisation of public and school visits
- Delivering and facilitating guided-tours on campus for the public and other groups of visitors in German and English
- Supporting maintenance of the Exhibition in close collaboration with external and internal service providers
- Communicating about and promoting the Exhibition programme via external and internal media channels
- Assessment of visitor experience and update of exhibition content and the tours according to performance and feedback
- Liaising with teachers, schools, external organisations and groups of the public
- Working with and training EMBL scientists to contribute to the public tours as tour guides and trainers
- Organising meetings, preparing presentations and reports, updating web content
- Supporting EMBL’s portfolio of Science Education and Public Engagement activities
- Either a degree in education/didactics/museum education, a qualification as teacher, or equivalent work experience in science centre setting
- At least 4 years’ professional experience working in museum or informal education (such as a science centre, museum, or similar)
- Experience in running guided tours
- Experience in developing, maintaining and updating interactive media exhibits
- The ability to understand and work with scientific concepts
- Experience in working with schools, young learners, and diverse public audiences
- German native or near-native language skills
- An excellent command of written and spoken English
- A scientific degree
- A track record of science communication activities
