At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research - Energy Systems Engineering (IEK-10) we focus on the optimal design and operation of integrated, decentralized energy systems with a high share of renewable energy. Computer simulation and numerical optimization are our essential tools to arrive at efficient, reliable, and cost-effective solutions. We contribute both to the development of mathematical models and to the development of improved simulation methods and optimization algorithms. Our methods and software-tools are validated against operating data of real systems. Furthermore, we conduct comprehensive case studies in order to test and further improve the scalability and the performance of our models and algorithms. Specially adapted methods and codes enable us to exploit the potential of high-performance computing with the aim of solving particularly large and complex problems.

We are looking to recruit a

Internship position in electrical engineering, power engineering, computer science, or related subjects

Your Job

New and efficient simulation methods are required to design and operate the multi-modal energy systems emerging with the integration of renewables. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) co-simulation is a good option to simulate such energy systems and test devices in a safe and flexible environment. Co-simulation integrates well-developed models in individual simulation environments and can also integrate other methods such as Digital Twin, which enables the information exchange between the real system and its simulation counterpart in real-time.

Your Tasks In Detail Are

  • Literature research
  • Improve the co-simulation model
  • Implement MQTT communication between the digital twin-based co-simulation platform and the controller under test
  • Compare different methods and analyze the performance of the implementation

Your Profile

  • Master studies in the field of Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Computer Science or related subjects
  • Interests and basic knowledge in energy system simulation, preferably Simulink
  • Basic knowledge and experience in information and communication technology, preferably MQTT and UDP
  • Basic understanding of real-time simulation and co-simulation is preferable
  • Good knowledge in a programming language, preferably MATLAB and Python
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written)
  • Independent working style and good analytical skill, willing to learn new things

Our Offer

  • A diverse and highly motivated working group of international character within one of the largest research institutions in Europe
  • Interdisciplinary work combining physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering
  • Intensive supervision by one or more experienced and helpful colleague(s)
  • Excellent technical equipment to successfully work from home
  • The position is currently planned for a fixed term of 6 months.

Due to the SARS-CoV-2 regulations, work is done mostly in the home office. If you are interested, please send us your complete application.

We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds, e.g. in terms of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation / identity, and social, ethnic and religious origin. A diverse and inclusive working environment with equal opportunities in which everyone can realize their potential is important to us.
