THERAPEUTIC AREA Cardio-Metabolism & Respiratory (CMR)
Within our Therapeutic Area Cardio-Metabolism & Respiratory (CMR), our innovation is evidenced through our long history of excellence in research and landmark clinical trials, culminating in our type 2 diabetes (Jardiance, Trajenta), heart failure (Jardiance), thromboembolic diseases (Pradaxa), acute myocardial infarction (Actilyse, Metalyse, hypertension (Micardis) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Spiriva, Spiolto).

THE POSITION
This role has an important strategic impact in terms of defining medical product strategies in cross-functional collaboration as well as in defining the future strategic direction of Patient Safety and Pharmacovigilance.
The Therapeutic Area Head CMR has overall medical strategic accountability for product benefit/risk, patient safety and product risk minimization strategies for marketed and/or investigational compounds on a global level.
The position holder represents Patient Safety & Pharmacovigilance in cross-functional Therapeutic Area (TA) teams that determine the medical-scientific strategy for the CMR TA.
This role is leading a team of 15-20 medical doctors globally and reports to the Global Head Patient Safety & Pharmacovigilance. As a member of the global leadership team, the Therapeutic Area Head is an important player in determining the overall strategic direction of Patient Safety & Pharmacovigilance.

This role can either be filled in Germany/Ingelheim or in the US/Riedgefield.
Tasks & responsibilities
  • As Therapeutic Area Head CMR you provide strategic and medical-scientific leadership to a team of Patient Safety Physicians (PSMDs), responsible for driving patient safety in the respective product and investigational compound Evidence Teams. You act as the key source of medical-scientific advice, coach the team to achieve excellence in delivery, as well as achieve common goals in close collaboration with cross functional teams.
  • You are accountable for benefit/risk judgements, patient safety and product risk minimization strategies for marketed and/or investigational compounds which is of high strategic relevance to the company.
  • You represent CMR Patient Safety & Pharmacovigilance in relevant internal committees and interfaces such as the Benefit-Risk-Committee (BRC), Clinical Expert Committee (CEC) and interaction with external stakeholders such as regulators, Data Monitoring Committees (DMC), patient organizations or other external stakeholders.
  • Within your role, you are responsible that the team is appropriately staffed and has the right set of capabilities and expertise needed for their roles.
  • Furthermore, you will have to be able to maneuver in a highly complex internal (interface with many stakeholders and committees in Medicine, Therapeutic Areas, Regions) and external environment (driven by interaction with regulators worldwide).
Requirements
  • Medical Doctor
  • Strong medical-scientific background and expertise from research and/or medical practice
  • Strong experience in the clinical development of investigational compounds and submission of marketing authorization applications is important
  • Excellent medical-scientific expertise and/or clinical experience in the Therapeutic Area of concern
  • Strong expertise in patient safety and pharmacovigilance and development of risk minimization strategies
  • Excellent leadership skills with ability to coach her/his team to delivery excellence
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to drive patient safety and evidence generation in cross-functional settings
  • Strong communication, collaboration, negotiation skills as well as the ability to make sound benefit-risk judgements
  • Intercultural savvy and fluency in English (both written and spoken)
