The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF in Darmstadt works together with industry and research at a top national and international level. The institute’s main research activities focus on specific issues in the areas of structural durability, system reliability, smart structures and plastics.

Automated decision-making systems have become integral to various domains, ranging from autonomous vehicles and robotics to financial trading and healthcare. However, these systems often encounter uncertainties arising from incomplete, ambiguous, or noisy data, which can compromise their reliability performance. This research aims to model uncertainties in automated decision-making based on an information fusion framework that can effectively integrate data from various heterogeneous sources. The goal is to enhance the accuracy and reliability of decision-making systems by leveraging the strengths of individual sources while compensating for their weaknesses.

The following position is available in the "Experimental System Analysis" group starting as soon as possible: Master student: Modelling Uncertainties in the Automated Decision-Making using Information Fusion

What you will do

  • Conduct an in-depth literature review on information fusion techniques, uncertainty quantification, and automated decision-making approaches.
  • Design and implement an information fusion architecture that accommodates data from heterogeneous sources.
  • Quantify uncertainties outputs of decision-making systems to assess the reliability of decisions.
  • Create a dynamic and adaptive information fusion model that can adjust its fusion strategies based on the availability and quality of information.

What you bring to the table

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics/Mechanical engineering/ Data Science.
  • Firsthand experience in MATLAB/Python.
  • English Proficiency, both spoken and written.
  • Prior knowledge of data processing is desired.

What you can expect

  • Opportunity to develop a career in a growing filed.
  • Chance to work on impactful projects with real-world applications.
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees’ skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
