THE ROLE
We have an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated Packaging Engineer to join our R&D team located in Darmstadt, Germany. In this role, you will work on end to end innovation, developing Wella Company Professional Packaging solutions for our brands. Throughout the innovation process, you will partner with your internal multifunctional technical and commercial colleagues (R&D formulation, Marketing, Manufacturing/Engineering) as well as externally with our packaging suppliers, design agencies, OEM’s and Third Party Manufacturers. Together you will be a key player in leading the development of innovative packaging solutions that drive the future success of our business.
Key Responsibilities
In this role:
You will report to a Wella Company Packaging Development Senior Manager.
- You design and deliver near-term (1-2 years) package innovations within initiatives meeting design intent, performance, functionality, aesthetics, cost and manufacturability, timing and quality requirements. You create and execute consumer-focused technical learning plans guiding the final designs that you develop and specify.
- Your projects include both structural and decorative packaging development and technologies. You partner across functions in order to overcome barriers and bring the brand vision and identity to life.
- You define packaging design performance criteria and apply FMEA approaches to build in robustness and quality from the beginning. You initiate and execute tests to demonstrate robustness and manufacturability.
- You collaborate with our plants and suppliers to understand and integrate the requirements of possible supply chain solutions in the packaging design & engineering process. You identify possible suppliers and cost drivers of your designs, consider menu options to optimize cost, scale and simplification delivering speed to market, delight and best value.
- You qualify and scale-up your package designs and technologies partnering with respective supply chain partners in line trials and pre-series until first production run.
- You search for new growth-driving innovation ideas and technologies internally and externally to make them available to grow our brands.
- You manage base business portfolio projects of our brands.
- Project management within Stage Gated Process and on time delivery of technical readiness with robust quality.
- Mentoring of Jr. technical staff.
- Foster a positive work environment and Wella values.
- You have the passion to grow capability for the R&D Packaging discipline and the overall R&D function. You are an active player partnering within the global network of R&D Packaging Development across the regions.
- University graduate (Packaging Development & Technologies) or Polymer Engineering with internship experience in Packaging R&D within the Beauty, FMCG or Health industries.
- Fundamental knowledge in packaging technologies (e.g. molding, flexibles, cartons, print & decoration, assembly), project management and packaging development approaches. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Able to identify smart solutions with the right level of pragmatism. Attention to details that matter in Beauty.
- Proven ability in molding technologies with experience in design and qualification of molded plastic components.
- Passion for solving problems using creativity and/ or analyzing skills. Experience in identifying technical solutions and their implementation is a plus.
- Good collaboration skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Entrepreneurial, agile and hands-on spirit. Focused and disciplined. High sense of accountability and ownership. Open to change in a dynamic growing environment.
- Good interpersonal communication and presentation skills for verbal and written communication of ideas, technical rationales, risks, issues and recommendations.
- Fluency in English, any other language is a plus.
- Experience in working in global diverse teams is a plus.
- Able to travel 10-20% of your time to domestic or international destinations.
