The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.
Job description:
We are looking for an excellent machine learning engineer with a passion for building AI solutions in the field of computer vision. This position comes with the opportunity to broaden your expertise to the full spectrum of thrilling research in the Helmholtz Association, ranging from aeronautics to deep-sea research, from astronomy to particle physics and from medical applications to climate research. Typical projects involve tight collaboration with researchers from these application domains where you will be tasked with devising suitable image analysis strategies, developing customized image analysis algorithms and identifying and adapting the best-matching state-of-the-art computer vision solutions to the specific problem at hand. In addition, you will support the development of domain-agnostic out-of-the-box solutions (for example nnU-Net) which unlock scalable problem solving within Helmholtz and beyond.
The position is embedded in Helmholtz Imaging, an initiative of the Helmholtz Association dedicated to elevating imaging-related research within Helmholtz to the next level through fostering synergies between engineers and researchers. The position is part of the ‘Applied Computer Vision Lab’ (ACVL) led by Fabian Isensee. The ACVL is tightly woven into the scientific infrastructure of the DKFZ and Helmholtz Imaging. This ensures a close connection to the most recent scientific developments in the field as well as an opportunity to take part in exciting science projects. Our partners in Heidelberg include the Junior Research Group Interactive Machine Learning, the Division of Intelligent Medical Systems and the Division of Medical Image Computing. A state-of-the-art GPU cluster with over 200 GPUs provides the necessary hardware for running extensive experiments.
Requirements:
- PhD or MSc in computer science, data science, physics, mathematics or a related field
- Pragmatic mindset and a great interest in applying methods across domains
- Ability to work independently and manage the communication and knowledge exchange with research partners both within the DKFZ and other Helmholtz Research Centers
- Experience in adapting state-of-the-art algorithms to new applications and domains
- Excellent oral and written English skills
To apply, please submit a brief cover letter stating your motivation for this position, curriculum vitae, name and email address of one reference as well as degree certificates and transcripts. Only complete applications can be considered.
We offer:
- Interesting, versatile workplace
- International, attractive working environment
- Campus with modern state-of-the-art infrastructure
- Salary according to TV-L including social benefits
- Possibility to work part-time
- Flexible working hours
- Comprehensive further training program

The position can in principle be part-time.
