Your mission:In recent years, technologies for renewable energy generation and electromobility have experienced significant progress in development. The research focus meanwhile shifts to decarbonizing energy-intensive, industrial processes, like steel- or aluminum production. The same applies to transforming coal power plants into low-carbon energy converting systems that rely on green electric power, heat storages, green hydrogen, and gas turbines. An economically viable transformation of industrial production into low-carbon processes is the motivation behind the foundation of the new DLR Institute for Low-Carbon Industrial Processes at both sites in Cottbus and Zittau. One major focus of the novel institute is technology transfer in close cooperation with regional companies and research facilities, which is of utmost importance for the Lusatia region in its structural transformation. The position is offered by the Department of Simulation and Virtual Design (SVD) located in Cottbus. As research assistant, you are responsible for development and evaluation of process simulations – from one process step to whole production facilities. You will examine, how and under which conditions new technologies can be integrated into industrial processes. Furthermore, you will perform optimizations to minimize CO2-emissions while maximizing energy efficiency.Your qualifications:- completed scientific university studies in the fields of chemistry, process engineering, mechanical engineering or other relevant courses of studies (Diploma or Master’s degree from university)
- experience in research and development of industrial processes, preferably in the field of chemical or petrochemical industry
- experience in modeling of industrial processes
- profound experience in using Flow-Chart-Software and modeling languages (Aspen+, Ebsilon, Modelica, Matlab/Simulink), preferably in Aspen+
- profound knowledge of higher programming languages, preferably Python
- knowledge in creating and utilizing surrogate models (Design-of-Experiment, Machine Learning, e.g. Random Forest Regression)
- technical understanding and strong interest in all research fields of the institute, such as high-temperature heat pumps or low-carbon reducing agents
- excellent organizational and collaborative skills as well as flexibility
- business fluent in English; knowledge of the German language is preferable
- willingness to attend further trainings
