PhD Position in Immunology

Institute of Immunology

The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with more than 80 clinics and institutes. It offers outstanding medical treatment and excellence in research and education with nearly 15,000 employees. We provide top research at the interface of medicine, science and technology and maintain research co-operations with universities all over the world.

Start In Our Team

The group of Andreas Hutloff at the Institute of Immunology in Kiel is looking for a doctoral student for a research project in the field of T cell/B cell interaction. The position is available from 1st of November 2021 (or later) and is initially limited to 3 years.
  • The main focus of our working group is research in T cell/B cell interaction and T follicular helper cells. This special subpopulation of T cells drives the differentiation of B cells into high affinity memory cells and long-lived plasma cells. Understanding the cellular crosstalk on a molecular level is of high interest not only to improve vaccination against infectious diseases but also to develop novel, tailored therapies against antibody-mediated autoimmune diseases. Interaction of antigen-specific T and B cells typically takes place in secondary lymphoid organs. However, we showed that similar reactions can also happen in inflamed non-lymphoid tissues (Vu Van et al., Nat Commun (2016) 7:10875; Hutloff, Front Immunol (2018) 9:1707).
  • Your project will mainly include the analysis of T and B cell interactions in a murine lung inflammation model. The lung can be a major reservoir of antigen-specific T and B cells. They form a fist line of defense against airborne antigens but can also cause major immune pathology. We are especially interested in factors regulating recruitment of T and B cells into the lung and their behavior in recall immune responses.
  • We are working with various state-of-the-art high-end technologies like multiparametric flow cytometry, confocal laser scanning microscopy, single cell sequencing, retroviral expression systems, and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene targeting. We make use of pre-clinical mouse models as well as analysis of human patient material.
  • You are a motivated person with a master’s degree in life sciences.
  • Strong interest in cellular immunology.
  • Passion for science.
  • You enjoy working in a team.
  • We offer optimal working conditions in a scientifically exciting, multi-disciplinary international research institute directly located at the Baltic Sea.
  • A broad spectrum of methods, and a pleasant working atmosphere.
  • In our team, precise practical training and teamwork are particularly important to us.
  • Salary will be according to salary group 13 TV-L (part-time/65%).
  • Further benefits: In-house childcare | Healthy at work – company health management | company social counselling | company and university sports | fitness at a company rate | further education and training opportunities | company pension scheme (VBL) | attractive employee discounts.
