Position Summary:

This position is responsible for representing Thermo Fisher Scientific at German federal and state level on public policy issues of importance to the company. The person will work out of Berlin, Germany, and report to the Senior Director of EMEA Government Relations in Brussels, Belgium.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead Public Policy & Government Relations in Germany and act as an advisor to the Germany Commercial Leader
  • In close collaboration with the Senior Director EMEA Government Relations and Public Affairs, develop and implement a Government Relations strategy for Germany
  • Work with Thermo Fisher colleagues to identify priority issues and develop company positions on relevant public policy proposals;
  • Establish strong relationships with appropriate public policy makers and opinion leaders to support business objectives; develop and maintain relationships with academia, industry experts and research institutions related to Thermo Fisher’s business;
  • Ensure effective representation of Thermo Fisher on the various working groups of interest active at national level (i.e. industry associations) and together with the Senior Director continuously assess whether Thermo Fisher’s interests are optimally covered by these platforms;
  • Maintain and communicate an effective monitoring and analysis of major national policy/legislative developments and initiatives likely to impact Thermo Fisher’s operations in Germany
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Established network of political, association and business contacts in Berlin
  • Strong familiarity with the Federal and State structure and decision-making process
  • Proven ability to develop advocate plans that meet business goals and to advocate successfully public policy positions
  • A background in relevant public policy issues including scientific policy and diagnostics, and the ability to learn new issues quickly
  • Self-starter and independent worker who’s able to work effectively in a geographically diverse organization
  • Reputation for behaving with uncompromising integrity

Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria:
  • College degree required.
  • At least 10 years of increasing experience in a government relations position
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Fluency in German and English is required and fluency in another language is preferred
