Your Role
This position will serve as a Senior Sales Engineer (SE) for Ciena’s IP and software product portfolio in EMEA focused on Vodafone. Several activities are implied, matching the various stages of an expected sales cycle, including:
Pre-Sales customer engagement
Pre-sales architecture and solution design
Detailed architecture and solution engineering, including RFx response activity and solution costing
Support for demonstrations, trials, and proofs of concepts
Interfacing with the customers at all stages, acting as the primary technical voice for Ciena as relates to the solutions offered
Liaising with several organizations within Ciena, including local/country sales teams, partners and channels, as well as technical, sales, commercial teams scoped as EMEA focused and/or globally focused
Your Responsibilities
Reporting to the SE manager, the candidate will work within a cross-functional team in support of Ciena’s IP Solutions Portfolio in EMEA
Works with local sales teams to determine the most effective engagement strategies for near term as well as sustained success within key accounts
Serves as the primary technical voice to determine and sometimes negotiate the best fit for Ciena’s portfolio in a given customer application or architecture
Acts as the technical lead, working alongside other engineering/design resources to specify the best technical solution for a given opportunity
Supports bid responses, as well as technical presentations, demos, and proofs of concept throughout a sales cycle
Communicates with customers (and channels/partners) across EMEA at a range of levels, to champion Ciena’s solutions. Shows strong ability to communicate a good blend of technology/networking trends, as well as business value of Ciena solutions. This implies frequent and sustained engagement to build and maintain the customer’s trust and confidence during long sales cycles and drive to successful outcome for Ciena.
Drives technical direction for key opportunities, including solution specification, design, and costing. This includes the ability to debate and discuss technology alternatives with customers and partners to drive to the best balance of features, price, and timeline for a given solution
Minimum Qualifications
Engineering Degree or equivalent.
7+ years of solid telecommunications industry experience, with either a Networking vendor or Tier 1 carrier experience
Deep knowledge of IP related technology stacks (Control, Data and Management Planes). Including IP Routing techniques, MPLS (LER / LSR), Segment Routing, EVPN, IPv6
Knowledge of Photonic / DWDM Systems, Control Plane, OTN Switching, Flexible Photonic Architectures, Converged Packet / Optical Networks & Orchestration systems is advantageous
Sound working knowledge of current technologies and trends, including: ITU-T, IEEE, MEF Ethernet services, packet transport architectures, and packet-optical networking trends and technologies.
Ability to dialog with customers on the merits of next generation packet technologies, including Packet Transport, ITU and IETF OAM technologies, packet tunneling technologies (MPLS-TP) and packet-optical convergence. Dialog must successfully encompass both detailed technical merits, as well as business merits to at least “first level” conversations
Good communicator at all levels – from executive to technical to operational audiences
Ability to connect into the various parts of the Ciena EMEA and corporate/global organization
Ability to travel, estimated as 25%
