Job Description

As Automation & Process Control (A&PC) Engineer you will manage automation activities for the facility in Stade, Germany. In this role you will further work on control strategy design, writing and loading control code, identifying and implementing process improvement opportunities, managing priorities for automation implementation, and managing the work of other automation resources from central engineering, plant technicians, and contractors. This role reports to the Pharma Solutions Process Automation Technology Leader (PhS PATL).

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Specific: Learn the new Emerson DeltaV control system and specific application for the site by engaging as a team member on the Mod 5 Migration Project.
  • Take ownership and management of the Emerson DeltaV control system for site upon completion of each project phase.
  • Serve as Process Automation Owner – taking full accountability for the automation improvement program for the facility.
  • Provide expertise in Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) for Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA).
  • Maintain a prioritized work list for process automation improvements.
  • Assure safe and Event-free implementation of process automation projects.
  • Identify process automation improvement opportunities and provide value assessments and prioritization.
  • Design and develop creative and effective process control strategies to optimize plant operations.
  • Maintain the plan to support and sustain process automation assets for the facilities (system upgrade planning).
  • Serve as the primary process automation representative for the plant for all capital, improvement and Digital projects which involve process control changes.
  • Manage the work of one or several automation resources include technicians, engineers, and contractors, depending on project workload.
  • Drive continuous improvement of process automation performance metrics including alarm management, manual intervention reduction, and Safety Instrumented System trips.
  • Serve as systems administrator for the process control area network.
  • Work with peers in the technology group to share knowledge and ideas.
  • Maintain all process information systems / historian (MES) site-specific applications for the plant and develop new applications for MES / Process Information.
Critical Success Factors
  • Strong technical skills and experience or aptitude in process automation.
  • Ability and desire to develop a thorough understanding of the manufacturing process.
  • Ability to partner with daily operations engineers, technologists, and operators.
  • Facilitative leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to apply capital project work processes which involve process automation solutions.
  • Troubleshooting process control logic in a live plant environment and in simulation.
  • Keep up-to-date on process control and process information technology advances, including Advanced Process Control.
  • Partner with control systems vendors, contractors, and central engineering.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree (Chemical Engineering is preferred).
  • Previous experience in process automation design / development is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in either process automation or manufacturing.
  • Must be fluent in German and English.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks at one time.
  • Familiarity with plant operations as well as project work in the process control discipline.
  • Highly motivated and results-driven individual with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact with cross functional teams, engineering groups, plant operations, research and commercial organization and management.
  • Strong written and organizational skills.
